Ang Ah Seng and Vivien Ang tell us about their love
The couple, who have been married for eight years now, first met at her birthday party, although he wasn’t one of the guests. Vivien was celebrating at the private room of the Sun Ray Cafe in Serangoon Gardens. Ah Seng was sitting outside, alone. He had just come from a swim at the nearby Serangoon Gardens Country Club. Vivien recalls with a laugh: “I cannot remember how we ended up talking but we exchanged numbers. I’d probably had too many drinks and even asked him to join in the celebration! The next morning, he asked me out for lunch and the rest is history. He saw my close friends and my mum, and he didn’t run away.”
What was it that you were attracted to your spouse?
VA: I’ve asked him this many times but I think fate and destiny played a huge part. I am attracted to gentle and quiet men. Ah Seng doesn’t have the airs of a conceited guy. He is the total opposite and I love that in him.
AAS: I just couldn’t stop thinking of her. I had never felt that way before.
What was your biggest obstacle?
VA: I actually knew he was interested in me after a few dates over lunch and dinner. As he was way older than me, I had wanted to end it but he persisted.
AAS: I couldn’t wait for her to be Mrs Ang. I feared that she would reject me due to our age difference or she might lose interest, so I drummed up the courage and got her pregnant first so she cannot escape!

Which habit are you most annoyed about your spouse?
VA: Too many to name. He always listens and gives in to me so I win in every situation, which is sometimes annoying. He is messy while I have OCD about everything from the dirty laundry being put in the correct basket to toilet cleanliness. He is quite health-conscious whereas I’m the total opposite when it comes to food and dietary concerns. He is an early bird while I only wake up by lunchtime!
AAS: She sleeps and wakes up really late and that bothers me, but I cannot seem to change that about her. And she’s always late. I need to get the helpers and our son to keep tabs on her punctuality.
How important is Valentine’s Day to you?
VA: We shouldn’t have to be told how or when to treat our partner special. Every day is like Valentine’s Day for me.
AAS: She’s my queen. I constantly remind her how much I’m thankful to have her.
Tell us the best moment in your relationship.
VA: There are so many, but right now it must be the planning and rebuilding of our new home.
AAS: Having a son with her.
Do you have date nights?
VA: We almost never have our own time. Ah Seng will never allow our son to be alone with our helper or driver alone. If we could have a special day together, maybe we could spend it without him and go on a dinner date.
AAS: Every fifth of the month is our special day. Besides that, I stay awake until 5am just to accompany her while she catches up on TV shows.
What have you learnt from this relationship?
VA: Given the age gap of over 20 years between us, people often judge before knowing us, although it doesn’t affect us. We are very happy and blessed to have found each other. If I can turn back time, I would do it all over again. And I won’t exchange him for anything else in the world.
AAS: I guess my only regret is not meeting her earlier. She will say that the time wasn’t right then and it’s all to do with fate.
