Dr Chew Bee Lynn

Dr Chew Bee Lynn is a research scientist whose interest in plant tissue culture ignited in her undergraduate years. Her work in the agricultural industry moves Malaysia towards a future with crops that are safe, healthy and sustainable to ensure better nutritional security to the nation. “I was shown the idea of cultivating and propagating plants via tissue culture (unlike the normal plant propagation methods involving soil or seeds), and that has opened various ideas and opportunities to further experiment on cells and plant cultures. This technology is a classic technology that applies to most plant species where its application improves the quality of plant stocks for large scale planting and propagation of rare species can be further investigated,” she explains.

Dedicated to turning this technology into a solution that is practical and applicable, she pursues research specifically on tissue culture propagation of superfruits and cell cultures of tropical, medicinal plants. Working with local growers, “motivated me to try my best to solve issues in the agriculture industry. To me, science must be practical, suitable to the local setting to bring small yet significant changes to the society,” she asserts.

“Dealing with growers from different backgrounds helped me to realise that science communication has to be simple and applicable. It will pave paths that can open other larger opportunities and create impact,” says the Universiti Sains Malaysia senior lecturer, sharing the attitude she now imparts to her students.
