Interview with Kim Lim on motherhood, skincare, and travel

Publish date: 2024-07-22

Kim Lim is the daughter of billionaire businessman Peter Lim, and hot property in Singapore society. An avid skincare and beauty lover, the mother-of-one has her jet-setting beauty regime down to a tee. Here, she shares her secrets to a perfect complexion and why cruises are her favourite way to travel.

As a skincare obsessive, what is the role of beauty in your life?

When I feel beautiful, I am empowered and confident. I struggle with the same issues everyone has, whether it’s acne, my weight or other physical insecurities. While I do make a big effort on my physical appearance, I also believe that feeling beautiful is a mindset – hence I devote time and money to supporting charities and causes I believe in, because these things make me feel good about myself.

You mention supporting worthwhile causes as a way to supporting a beautiful mindset. Tell us about that.

I am a long-time supporter of the Animal Lovers League and frequently participate in Operation Red Shirts – a charity that donates food and essential supplies to the old and needy in Singapore. It’s incredibly rewarding and very worthwhile. I also donate to orphanages in Mongolia and Malaysia, especially now I’m a mother, as it has become even more important to me.

And how has becoming a mother to your young son changed your priorities?

Being a mom has made me a better person. I’m much more responsible now, I take less for granted and I want to keep improving so that I can take better care of my son.

As a mother and an entrepreneur, you have a very busy schedule. How do you make time for yourself, and what do you enjoy when it comes to rest and relaxation?
I need my facials, hair treatments, beauty and aesthetic treatments, even when I travel. I have a list of all the best places to visit which are my regular go-to places all over the world. I actually use very little makeup and I prefer to make the effort in improving my skin so that I don’t need to cover-up. My friends often ask me for beauty recommendations and my beauty secrets… perhaps one day I will share them with everyone!

Whether you’re at sea or in the air, when you’re on the move what beauty treats can’t you live without?

I’m an avid fan of face masks, especially when I travel, as that really does tend to dry my skin. Aside from that, I can’t live without my sunblock and lip balm. I especially love sea travel as I find the fresh air and endless blue horizon so invigorating and it’s much less dehydrating for my skin. If I’m on a cruise, I usually pack extra sunblock and add-on an oral sunblock supplement, too.

In addition to a Western spa, beauty and hair salon, Dream Cruises also houses the world’s largest Asian spa at sea. How do you feel about Chinese reflexology and acupuncture?

I totally believe in it. I’ve always been a believer in natural healing, and I think that Chinese reflexology and other traditional approaches to wellness can offer another valuable route to caring for your body, and your mind.

You are often jet-setting around the globe. Why is travelling important to you?

I learn something on every journey I take, even when it is a visit to somewhere I have already been. Travelling inspires me and gives me new ideas – I love it.

Who has been your biggest source of inspiration in life?
My family are my most prized possessions, they are always on my mind even when I may be physically away from them. Of everyone, my father is my biggest source of inspiration. He is a self-made man and he has always taught me to be grateful and kind to others. I hope that I will do him proud.
