Munir Osman

The idea that art, chemistry, and sustainabilitycould harmonise to create beautiful coloursinspired Munir Osman to establish hiseponymous apparel brand, Muni, thatexclusively uses natural dyes derived fromtropical plants. Natural pigments come fromleaves, fruit skins and tree bark, creating huesthat fade to a one-of-a-kind patina with wear.
The architectural graduate first encounterednaturally dyed fabrics in Bali amid an interiordesign project reconstructing a traditionalwooden house for a client. Encouraged toknow more, Munir travelled to Jogjakarta, where he learned traditionalhand dyeing techniques andbatik-making.
“The unpredictability, imperfection andinconsistency are my favouriteaspects about working with plant dyes. Theseunique characteristics challenge our usualperception of aesthetics and what is consideredbeautiful. On top of that, it causes no harm to consumers, dyers, and the environment,” the thoughtful designer shares.
Working out the best production method has remained Munir’s greatest challenge yet. “It takes countless trial and error, and we are constantly adjusting our process to improve our colours and products,” Munir admits. He aspires to build Muni as a top national dye brand, reaching eco-conscious consumers globally.
“I wish more Malaysians knew that textile production can be sustainable, ethical, and possess great value. Supporting the sustainable fashion industry means supporting a cause to address the problem of mass consumption, unethical practices and a culture of waste.”
