Sabrina Tan | Women of Power 2024

Publish date: 2024-07-16

Sabrina Tan believes that technology is less about innovation, and more about subtraction. That is, improving processes in one’s chosen area – which is skincare, as the founder of tech-enabled Skin Inc – by stripping routines of anything deleterious to well-being.

The custom serum cocktails that her company produces, therefore, are an expression of that fundamental axiom in the way they’re tailored precisely to users’ skin conditions, squeezing out the maximum benefit for as few steps as necessary after initial measurements.

This first-of-its-kind product allowed Skin Inc, too, to skip some steps in its rise to glory, as the company went on to clinch multiple accolades, then partnerships with major retailers like Sephora and Bergdorf Goodman. The brand can now be found in over 75 cities worldwide – which has only spurred Sabrina to keep iterating in her search for more beauty optimisers.

The budding beauty-tech mogul has expanded the brand’s range to include devices that utilise light therapy to soothe and nourish skin, but what she’s really excited about is the use of artificial intelligence to do the subtracting for her customers. When incorporated into an application, it tracks a host of activities from sleep quality to hormonal fluctuations before curating a suite of treatments and products to nip potential beauty problems in the bud. With a visionary’s fervour, she says, “In the future, the app will allow you to scan for ingredients that’s bad for your skin and even dial up an aesthetician.”

Like a handheld “personal coach on demand”, she believes that integrating AI into our skincare routines can make beauty effortless – in turn, encouraging a more mindful approach to life.

Says Sabrina, “I think skincare should be seen as self-care. Less is more, and you should be able to ‘bio-hack’. This means understanding our own skin more, enabling ourselves to understand our skin more, and knowing what ingredients are good for us.”
