Karen Soh | Women of Power 2023

Karen is one of a group of big-hearted doctors who volunteer their time at the Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association, where they perform laser tattoo removal on former drug offenders in a bid to uplift the beneficiaries’ lives and destigmatise their past. While this is part of her clinic’s community service initiatives, the physician who practices aesthetics medicine is absolutely no stranger to social and philanthropy work in her personal life.
For 11 years and counting, she has been serving faithfully as a prominent society rainmaker for Dover Park Hospice (DPH). Currently, she is co-chairman for its fundraising committee and a member of its governing council. Aside from other ad-hoc projects she could lend her support to, such as migrant worker medical outreach during the Covid pandemic, she also believes in empowering women.
During her two-year term as president of the Association of Women Doctors (AWDS) Singapore, she was instrumental in raising funds and mentoring medical students so that they were able to participate in medical missions abroad. She had also sat on the executive committee of the Raffles Girls’ School alumnae.
“Giving back to the society is something I feel passionately about. I have been the beneficiary of many before me who have supported me in my journey and when I could, I would like to pay it forward. I believe God has a purpose for me in this life and I live to fulfil that purpose.”
Making an impact is a deeply personal act to her, says Karen, who does not desire any recognition or award. Apart from her strong religious belief, she keeps herself going thanks to the tremendous support from her family, colleagues and the Good Samaritans from DPH. “We are all sum of different kinds of impact, for better or worse, and I hope to be able to make a positive impact on those I encounter.”
Her advice to women looking to kickstart a journey as an impact-maker is to not hesitate: “Pick a cause you feel strongly about, look for a mentor and just do it! Truly, it is more blessed to give than to receive, and personally, I have received manifold what little I have given in treasures that are invaluable.”
